Description

Vladimir Lebedev
(1891-1967) is one of the best Soviet artists and illustrators of books. He became an early professional - since 1911, he published drawings in magazines, while continuing to finish his studies in various private studios in St. Petersburg. The main school for him was always his own creative practice, driven by an insatiable desire for perfection, and he studied for almost all of his life.
Even as a professor, he persistently comprehended the principles of Cubist painting, realizing his search in the graphic series "Laundresses" (1920-25), as well as in the political posters "Windows of Growth" (1920-21).
Bold simplification and flattening of the form, sharp juxtapositions of a few bright colors gave his compositions a kind of monumentality. As a direct continuation of the posters, a series of satirical drawings "Panel of the Revolution" (1922) was made, which brought the artist fame.
The most powerful and fruitful effect of Lebedev's search was on his book schedule. Painting experiments helped him to open a new era in the illustration of children's books. In 1924-33, Lebedev headed the art editorial office of the Department of Children's and Youth Literature of the State Publishing House, turning it into a center for creating highly artistic books for children.
